The present arrangement of 5 Renaissance pieces from different composers came about from the arranger’s desire to perform these particular works and wanting to be creative in their scoring. As such, the instrumentation of each movement varies from one to another, allowing for multiple colors beyond homogenous 5-part writing. This scoring also has the practical benefit of allowing periodic rest throughout the work, which is helpful when the piece is performed at multiple Christmas services in a single day, as is often the case.
