This English Carol may date to as early as the 17th century, but became popular in England by the mid eighteenth century. Although the title is often seen as “God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen,” common usage in earlier times meant “continue to carry on in a merry way,” as “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.”
