RONDO by Jeff Smallman
As a student attending the University of Western Ontario, Jeff Smallman
composed the Rondo for string quartet as an orchestration
assignment. Rather than arranging an existing piece, Mr. Smallman decided
to compose his own. The harmonies are traditionally classical and the form
is also traditional, being in the rondo form: ABACA. Each statement of the
A section, however, is treated slightly differently while still being
obviously A. This was Mr. Smallman's first composition for strings but
certainly not his last. Another string piece by Jeff Smallman that is
available through Eighth Note Publications is his String Quintet. Rating: Easy-Medium

DIVERTIMENTO by Donald Coakley
Donald Coakley was commissioned to write a work for the Suzuki String
School of Paris, France, Karen Kimmett, Director. It is scored for a
string orchestra consisting of parts for 3 violins and 1 cello. A
viola part has been added by the composer as an alternate for Violin 3. A
combination of meter changes, use of harmonics and a variety of styles and
tempi in this 5-movement work make this composition a substantial
addition to the Suzuki string orchestra repertoire. Rating: Difficult
