STICK DANCE FOR EIGHT HEADS by Jeff Smallman
Stick Dance is reminiscent of Canaries, a solo work for 4 timpani composed by Eliott Carter. Like Canaries, this piece is an example of metric modulation, changing tempo using the rhythms present. Unlike Canaries, this work is written for 2 sets of drums: 4 timpani, and 4 tom-toms. The composer chose to use tom-toms due to their percussive tone which offsets the resonance of the timpani. Full of energy and rhythmic drive, Stick Dance for Eight Heads is a great piece for showing off 2 good percussionists. Rating: Medium

SOLILOQUY FOR ANNE by Adrian Bourgeois
Soliloquy for Anne was originally written for six timpani. Knowing not many schools or band program have access to six timpani, two tom-toms could be used in place of the upper two drums. This is an exciting work for solo percussion showing off the capabilities and colours available to timpani. Rating: Medium

NOT SURE YET by Dwayne Engh
The intent of this piece is every drummer's dream - to just groove and have fun doing it. The entire piece is played on an assortment of buckets and garbage cans (both metal and plastic). Parts can be easily doubled if desired. As well, there is the "serious" moment of the playful rendering of "O Canada" near the end on kazoos. Any song can be inserted at that point (as long as it is a piece that is normally taken seriously or is "high brow"). This is scored for an ensemble of at least 8 players. Rating: Medium-Difficult

TRASH, SCRAP AND DRIVEL by Dwayne Engh
Trash, Scrap N' Drivel was written with the intent of creating a fun piece for students to play that a non-musician could easily teach to an eighth grade class with little musical experience - and that allowed many dramatic possibilities in the blocking and staging of the piece. It is scored for an ensemble of at least 8 players. Rating: Medium

HOW I BECAME STUPID by Dwayne Engh
Written during a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts in the summer of 2005 for the Calgarian Move to Strike Percussion Group, this playful piece is based on the Martin Page novel of the same name. It is influenced by Minuro Miki's brilliant work Marimba Spiritual - for marimba and three percussion players. Rating: Medium-Difficult

CAROL OF THE BELLS by Dwayne Engh
The simple setting of this well known tune was done in my first year of working with the percussion ensemble at a Junior High School. I had quite a few problems finding music suitable for their level of development, so I wrote a simple arrangement for them for the Holiday Season. We were lucky enough to have an Elementary School as a feeder school that had hand bells, so the optional hand bell introduction was written. It is arranged for 2 Bells parts, Chimes and percussion.
