GRAND CHORUS AND DIALOGUE by E. Gigout Arranged by David Marlatt
Another dramatic work by Donald Coakley, Jubilant Dialogue is all that you have come to expect from this Canadian composer. There are a number of interesting percussion parts that add to the power and majesty of this 6 1/2 minute work. A flurry of upper woodwind trills punctuated by the brass sets the tone for the piece that builds in intensity all through the work. An excellent choice for senior high school bands or university/college groups. Back to the Repertoire List | Back to the Catalogue Menu

Tribal Dance is a technical showpiece for the woodwinds. Its slow opening features the sax section and then proceeds to a rhythmic triplet figure which gradually accelerates to a furious tempo at the conclusion. The title of the piece is actually Lesghinka as it has been taken from the Iveria Suite of Ippolitov-Ivanov. Tight ensemble playing, rustic percussion parts and exciting technical parts make this a piece to demonstrate the control of an ensemble. Back to the Repertoire List | Back to the Catalogue Menu
This spectacular new piece commissioned by the Markham District High School Wind Symphony, Bill Thomas conductor, is a large-scale dramatic work for concert band. Chromatic harmonies and dissonant intervals create tension and excitement. Mr. Coakley's brilliant writing for the many band pieces he has done has reached a pinnacle with this new composition. Sonics is around 12 minutes in length and touches on a variety of compositional techniques. Within the sonata-allegro form themes are introduced and developed throughout the ensemble. Contrapuntal elements as well as many meter changes (7/8, 5/8) keeps the pace of the piece quick and energetic. This is a monumental addition to concert band literature and will quickly find it's place with other Grade 6 level band pieces. The composer describes this work as "acidy" and that term seems to best capture the mood of the piece. Sonics is a very difficult work that would prove to be a challenge for a university/college level ensemble. Professional bands may also consider this piece because of the virtuosity that is required from all players. This piece requires little introduction. Beethoven’s most famous overture was arranged and published for band by Carl Fischer years ago. This new arrangement features new scoring and an oversized complete score. The horns and cornets are given more significant parts then the previous arrangement and the alto saxophones are also given some solo lines. This is a tour de force that would impress an adjudicator and dazzle audiences. Back to the Repertoire List | Back to the Catalogue Menu
This powerful and dramatic work makes an ideal contest piece. It is based on the legends The Fairy Ring from the Chippewa tribe and The Witch of the Mitche-hant from the Passamaquoddy. Both contain colourful writing for both winds and percussion. This new work offers you something new for your next concert. 225 million years ago, all of the earth's land masses were combined into one super continent- Pangaea. This giant land was inhabited by creatures totally alien to the world we know. Imagine if you could travel back in time and visit this primordial world. This work is an attempt to capture, in music, the experience of voyaging to The Plains of Pangaea. This work is very dramatic. Creative combinations of instruments create new colours within the ensemble. Great for concerts or contests.
