Concert Band and Wind Ensemble
SYMPHONY NO. 1 Movement II by G. Mahler Arranged by David Marlatt
Mahler is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. There are very few arrangements of his brilliant music so this arrangement for band of his first symphony is quite significant. The melodic material flows all through the ensemble and each section is featured at some point. There is even a significant section in the middle of the work that is a tuba section solo! An exciting piece from beginning to end. Back to the Repertoire List | Back to the Catalogue Menu
This is a fun and light change of pace in a concert. The Frog and the Crow was originally a choral piece that was so popular, a band version was demanded. It is sub-titled "A Riverside Hoe-Down" and there are interesting parts for all. This tune is fun for both players and audiences. Back to the Repertoire List | Back to the Catalogue Menu

CANON by J. Pachelbel Arranged by David Marlatt
Canon by Johann Pachelbel is one of the most famous and recognizable pieces of classical music. The treatment of the melody in this arrangement follows a popular Baroque tradition, the concerto grosso. This technique utilizes a small group of soloists that were supported by the remainder of the ensemble. In this arrangement, the solo instruments are 2 flutes and 2 clarinets which have the majority of the technically scalar passages as well as the lyrical melody line. The "chamber sound" created by this arrangement is a welcome variation from the tutti sound that is commonly found in concert band writing. Crimond or The Lord's My Shepherd is a simple and elegant hymn that is commonly sung in church. This short arrangement opens with a solo brass quartet then builds and develops this beautiful melody into a colourful mosaic of sound and timbre. Melody is passed from section to section adding interesting rhythmic variations which leads to a large and dramatic ending, with dissonance in the lower voices, resolving to a powerful major chord. This energetic composition is the composer's way of paying homage to some of his favourite compositions and composers such as John Cheetham, John Barnes Chance and the great Alfred Reed. Short musical quotations and suggestive melodic or rhythmic passages are included in the framework of this piece. The majority of the material is original and the driving rhythms, soaring lyrical themes and jazz-like harmonies are all elements Mr. Marlatt came to know and enjoy since he began playing in concert bands. There is a scaled-down version of this piece for brass quintet. Back to the Repertoire List | Back to the Catalogue Menu
FINALE from "SYMPHONY #1" by L. van Beethoven Arranged by David Marlatt
The nine Symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven are considered by many to be among the greatest orchestrations of all time and they are often used as models by later, great composers. His Symphony No. 1 was written in 1800 and shows the powerful influences of Haydn and Mozart. The form is clear and the use of tonality is very traditional. This sort of clarity is ideal as a showpiece for band. Technical woodwind parts and supporting articulated brass passages make this orchestral transcription a great new addition for the repertoire of the concert band. CORONATION SCENE from "BORIS GODUNOV" by M. Moussorgsky Arranged by David Marlatt
Boris Godunov is an opera that centers around the Russian people in the early 17th century. Coronation Scene is one of the grandest scenes in the opera. This is when the great square in Moscow is filled with people and the pealing of the great bells of the Kremlin sound with trumpets, gong and full chorus. The grand scale of this work has been captured in this full transcription from the orchestral score of Moussorgsky. There have been several other concert band editions created over the years (Rubank and Carl Fischer) but none contains the lyric middle section which has been included in this version. This is when the title character sings to the people, which has been given to the euphonium/baritone in this arrangement. This work makes a terrific mass band piece because of its scale and style. This is truly an exciting new version. Back to the Repertoire List | Back to the Catalogue Menu

Craigellachie!, a Scottish battle cry, is the name given to the spot near Eagle Pass, which cuts through Canada’s Rocky Mountains, where the last spike of the Trans-Canada railway was pounded into the earth. This piece is an attempt to express, in music, the indomitable spirit of all those thousands who struggled so hard, not to build a railway, but a nation. In the tradition exemplified by Mozart in his "Musical Jokes", Jeff Smallman has written a work for band that should bring a smile to every face. As all conductors know, not every player in a band learns at the same speed and, therefore, mistakes are bound to happen. For your enjoyment, By THAT Much has already provided a plethora of typical (and not so typical) mistakes for players of every age to make. Back to the Repertoire List | Back to the Catalogue Menu

The idea for this march originated from a conversation that took place in the pine forests of Camp Borden, Ontario, during Basic Recruit Course with the Canadian Armed Forces. The composer listened as one of his instructors spoke passionately about the possibility of a new kind of army, an army that would bring peace to the world rather than war. And even though the day when that goal is truly accomplished still lies, unfortunately, sometime in the future, it is true that the honourable role of peacekeeping has now become a major focus of both Reserve and Regular Armed Forces in Canada.
